Running down the street, Weapons and gear heavy as can be My glasses fog, im sweaty, cant see Im tired now staggering on my feet Pop pop pop Boom Boom Oh shit, ambush...kick in that door People inside, ready to shoot..hit the floor Rifle fire, grenades, smoke fills the room I shoot back, bullets true! Six people, blood runs red, Six people, all lie dead. I breathe deep, its over...through! A scream....a yell! Battle buddys gone, missing, I go back, by my head, bullets whizzing He yells again, from where I cant tell. Theres our truck, on fire Oh shit, hes inside screaming in pain He struggles to get out, in vain. Hes on fire too..situation is dire. Finally he stops, finally he is free We pull his body out, a crusted husk Alive at dawn...dead by dusk. Pack him up, send him home to Tennessee. I drive on, carry his flag It aint easy, always tough Life of a Soldier, very rough Once a funny man, now he lays forever in a bodybag. Next day, a a soldiers farewell, we raise our hand We stand in formation An honored dedication And at TAPS, salute the Missing Man.
