Yesterday, 19th May 2018, marked a historical date not only for a very special couple but also for the entire human population of the world. Yesterday, a couple was joined in matrimony, witnessed by millions. A woman whom as a little girl used to dream of becoming a princess found her dream come true when she met and fell in love with a true blue blood Royal Prince. And people say fairytales aren't real. Pfft. Like the rest of the world, I was glued to the TV for the entire live broadcast which went on for a solid five hours. It was worth every second. He is a Prince from the British Royal that is strict with traditions, protocol and a rather stiff upbringing. She is a commoner, an American actress of biracial family and a divorcee. Sound like an unlikely pair to ever hook up, right? That's what everybody thought. The two were set up on blind date by a mutual friend. They hit it off from the get go. Sparks flew and there was instant chemistry between them. With both being public figures, they did their best to keep their relationship a secret for as long as they possibly can. They wanted to get to know each other better before making it public. It paid off. They fell madly in love with each other. For him to marry, he had to get the Queen's permission first. It was simple enough as he is a true Prince Charming who can charm his way around and the Queen is his grandmother. All he had to do was put on his charm to win grandma over. And he did. He won her over. He broke the rules though. He went to see her mother to ask for her permission to marry her daughter before he spoke to his grandmother. That's how strong and deep his love is for the woman who had captured his heart. What I love about them is the fact that they both stayed true to who they are. They know there are certain traditions and protocol they had to follow in planning their wedding but they were determined to have the kind of wedding they want to have. Who would have imagined there would be an African American Bishop giving a sermon at a British Royal Wedding? Or having a gospel choir singing 'Stand By Me' in the church at a British Royal Wedding? It has never been done before. But they made it happen yesterday. In a clever and subtle way they had made their statement - this is our wedding, our day, and we're going to do things our way. I loved that. But the thing I love the most is watching the deep love they have for each other. They were not shy about showing their love openly. The way he looks at her and the way she looks at him, there is no mistaking the love between them. No doubt, she's an actress and she can pull off playing a role but from what I saw, there was no faking what was shown on their faces and in their eyes. They showed the world that nothing is impossible when the love is true. Witnessing the union of The Royal Highness the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has inspired me to keep on believing in what I believe in. Miracles do happen and dreams do come true. Have patience, trust the process, and keep the faith. True love will prevail. "There's power in love. Don't underestimate it. Don't even oversentimentalize it. There's power, power in love. Not just in its romantic forms but any form, any shape of love. There's a certain sense in which when you are loved and you know it, when someone cares for you and you know it, when you love and you know it, it actually feels right. There's something right about it. And there's a reason for it. The reason has to do with the source. We were made by the power of love. And our lives were meant and are meant to be lived in that love. That's why we are here. Ultimately the source of love is God Himself, the source of all of our lives. There's an old medieval poem that says, 'where true love is found, God Himself is there.' There's power in love. There's power in love to help and heal when nothing else can. There's power in love to lift up and liberate when nothing else will. There's power in love to show us the way to live. Love is not selfish and self-centered. Love can be sacrificial. And in so doing, becomes redemptive. And that way of unselfish, sacrificial, redemptive love, changes lives. And it can change this world." ~ an excerpt from Bishop Michael Curry's sermon at the Royal Wedding yesterday. .... pretty powerful message, no?
