I couldn't take this anymore.  I packed up a bag, and got into the car.  I didn't know where I was going, but I knew why. I needed to say goodbye.  But more importantly, I needed to ask for forgiveness.

It wasn't until I drove past the big blue house that I realized where I was going.  That house was his neighbor's.  It seemed to loom over the whole block.  Tears started selling in my eyes when I passed his house.  As I reached the end of the road, I could see the stars.  They were always so big, but tonight, they were close enough to touch.

The road turned to sand beneath the car.  I stopped, and got out. It was so warm during the day, I forgot how cold it gets at night.   I took of my shoes, like I used to do with him.  The further I ran into the sea of sand, the more I felt at home.

After what felt like forever and no time at all, I stopped.  I looked up at the stars, and smiled.  I was ready to move on.  Not to forget, but ready to be happy, especially when I thought of him. I opened my mouth and shouted at the ever-expanding sky, at the all-knowing stars, and, most importantly, at him.  "Do you forgive me yet?  Forgive me for not being able to help you?  For not knowing that something was wrong?"

Obviously, there was no answer.  As I turned to go back to the car, I stepped on something smooth and round.  Looking at it, it glinted in the dim moonlight.

I picked it up, and, to my surprise, it was a locket.  Not just any locket.  It was my locket, the one I had lost so many years before.  The one I lost the night I first met him.

I opened it up, and smiled at what was inside.
