it's a cruel melody when you sing 
but i still dance to every beat 
with red rivers flowing out of me 
one-step-two-steps closer 
halfway up the scale then 
plunging back down again 

it's a cruel melody when you sing 
yet i listen to every note 
and i hope this time the song will change 
am i going deaf because everything still sounds the same
beat after beat note after note 
yet i still hope 

it's a cruel melody when you sing 
and i hum each note with tears in my eyes
i memorized all the words and when to catch my breath
i remembered the part where you said the humming bird would die
and the part where i left
