It wasn't subtle. In fact, the cat threw itself straight through the window, a huge crash echoing through Shadow' s house.
Felix sat up and looked over at Shadow: she was looking at him.
"What was that?" She asked.
"The cat broke in," Felix replied.
Their brains, sluggish with sleep, must have woken up at the same time, because they both get to their feet in unison and begin walking towards the broken window.
"What the hell is wrong with this cat?" Shadow asked.
"...perhaps it's a robot."
She stared at him. "What'd you say?"
"Uh...I said maybe it's a--"
"Robot!" Shadow exclaimed, grabbing a case and throwing the flowers on the floor.
Felix yanked it out of her grip. "I'll do it."
She blinked, then nodded. "Ok."
Felix had no idea what was going on. What did he know about robots? Oh right. They don't like water.
Felix tightened his grip on the vase and approached the stairs.
"Hello!" He yelled. "Mr. Cat-Robot?"
Shadow snorted behind him.
There was a sudden beep, and then the carpet goes up in flames, trailing all the way of the stairs, through the hall, into the rooms, and...
"No!"
Felix hadn't realized he had yelled the word until the vase was ripped out of his hands, and there was a loud booming noise as Shadow threw it at something slinking off towards the open window.
"You bitch!" Shadow screamed over her parent's screams.
Felix coughed, his chest tightening, and he realized his asthma was acting up.
Shadow turned to run up the stairs, but he grabbed her arm.
As she spun towards him, the fire framing her dark hair made it look like lava, and the fire glowed in her eyes.
Felix coughed, starting to get dizzy, and let go of her arm to dig through his pants, and...oh,shit. His inhaler was floating in the river.
And so he turns around, his body trying to rid him of an organ in it's hacking, and stumbled towards the window.
Half way there, his vision goes black and he sinks to the ground and curls up, coughing.
"Felix? Hey, Felix!"
Shadow' s hands shook his shoulder, and he opened his eyes to find that she had dragged him over to the window, and he was breathing normally again.
"What the hell was that?" She demanded.
"As-Asthma," Felix stammered. "I have asthma."
"Where's your inhaler then?!"
"In my old clothes...floating down a river..."
Shadow turned to the fire, tears shining clearly in her pale eyes. "My parents...their gone..."
Felix closed his eyes. "My parents burned to a crisp when I was a kid. I'm an orphan..."
Shadow grabbed his arm and began dragging him towards the door.
"Not in my presence," she snapped.
