If Felix were to tell the girl, Shadow, of his real reason being ambushed by a cat, well, she would call the cops on him.
At six years old, he burned his house (and his parents) to a crisp, then ran away from home.
At twelve, he'd killed two more people over a bag of garbage full of food.
At fifteen, he was arrested for murdering a woman who had a baby.
At sixteen, he got out of jail and left the country.
And now, at seventeen, he was bursting into teenage girls homes. Naked.
The truth was, he believed it was truly an Angel to set the cat on him. For his actions. But what had Shadow ever done?
As far as he was considered, she was an innocent. A truly good person.
But then again, perhaps she's a good girl with bad habits.
Felix could imagine her beating a guy to death with a wrench, as he had done.
But he couldn't imagine seeing her in handcuffs.
If she were a criminal, she would not have been caught. She would not have gone to jail, unlike him.
And yet, something about her reminded Felix of himself.
A younger him. Somebody named Felix who was two years old and sucked on his thumb. She seemed that innocent.
But he could still imagine her killing a guy over a bag of garbage.
Perhaps everyone had that desperation for food.
Or perhaps Felix was crazy.
He was sitting on the couch. Shadow had fallen asleep on the floor. Her black hair covered her face, but he could still feel the intensity of her silvery gray eyes as she spoke to him about power and choices.
Perhaps he was sane. Perhaps he was so sane he was insane. Or perhaps she was insane. Perhaps everyone was insane in a world meant for sanity.
Perhaps that's why the Angels sent the cat.
The cat.
Felix looked out the window, and saw it staring back at him from the backyard.
Perhaps he was wrong. Perhaps it's the cat that's insane.
That would explain a lot.
It's face is caved in.
Did Shadow do that?
Perhaps she is insane as well.
Perhaps Felix is the only sane one.
'Felix' He thought. 'You think too much. Stop thinking.'
Perhaps-No.
'And stop saying perhaps' He said to his brain.
Maybe he was dead. Maybe he had gone to hell. But maybe he had gone to heaven.
Felix sighed, sitting back down on the couch.
'Felix' he thought. 'Shut the fuck up and go to sleep'
And so he does.
And then the Cat breaks in.
