Shadow shone the flashlight into the trees.
"Is...is someone there?" She stammered.
Whoever was in the bushes moved again, and Shadow squinted, scowling slightly.
"Whoever's out there, come out now!"
The bushes rustled, and a cat, large, gray, with golden eyes.
"You told me to come?" The cat asked, it's voice dangerously hissing.
Shadow gasped and stumbled back, yelping as she tripped and fell.
The cat advanced, growling, and before Shadow could defend herself, it bit her.
She yelled in pain and outrage, and swung with her flashlight.
It let go of her with a howl of pain, and she kicked at it.
The heel of her boot connected with it's face, and to her horror, it's face caved in.
"Oh my God!" She screamed, frantically getting to her feet and running.
A couple feet before her porch, she saw the cat chasing her out of the corner of her eye and picked up her pace.
The cat picked up it's pace as well.
A foot before she reached the porch, the cat's claws swiped at her ankle, making her stumble, but she managed to keep her balance, throwing herself on her porch and bursting through her front door and slammed it shut.
There was a heavy thud as the cat ran right into it, and Shadow flinched.
"Shadow?" Her mother asked, walking down the stairs. "What were you doing outside?"
"I thought I heard a cat," She lied. "...I did. But it really doesn't like me..."
Her mother stared . "It attacked you?"
"It bit me! And scratched me!"
Her mother sighed. "Go get some bandages from the kitchen..."
Suddenly the door burst open, and a young, NAKED, boy, fell on the floor.
"Oh my God!" Mom exclaimed, covering her eyes.
Shadow was transfixed by the boy's eyes: a stunning golden-amber, like the whiskey that her father drank.
"Are you...okay?" She asked, kneeling down beside him, her eyes captured by his and not straying south.
"I-yeah...where Am I?"
"You're in my house...can you tell me your name? Mine is Shadow."
"It's Felix. My name's Felix..."
"Okay. Felix, can you tell me why you're naked?"
"No...I-I can't remember..."
"Ok. That's okay. Can you wear some of my dad's clothes?"
"Yeah..."
"Okay...mom, can you get him some clothes?"
Her mother nodded, turning and hurrying up the stairs.
Shadow smiled at Felix. "Don't worry. Why were you in the woods?"
His breath hitched. "I was taking a walk. The-The cat! It ambushed me!"
"The cat? The one that just tried to maim me?"
His eyes widened. "It got you, too? There's others...there must be others...I think the cat was delivered by the Devil..."
'I think you're nuts' Shadow thought.
Instead she said, "perhaps it was from an Angel. Perhaps something good comes out of this."
"No. Nothing good can come out of the Devil's work. The cat is a monster."
"Not all monsters do monstrous things," Shadow countered, remembering have heard the words speaken on a television show.
"What if we become monsters?" Felix asked, looking down, his red hair falling into his eyes. "Would we be evil?"
"Everyone has the power," Shadow replied. "We can use that power for good. Or for bad. We choose. What would you choose?"
He looked at her, his eyes deadly serious, and said, "I would choose good."
"Good. Now get your ass off my shiny floor and sit on the carpet. And don't pee yourself."
