Chapter One

She stood facing him in the sky’s haze, the street kissed by the soft glow of the lamp lights. Cars rushed by, illuminating his face with their commanding yellow beams. Her pale skin was shadowed by the light, silhouetted against the heavily-gleaming headlights from cars that passed them. The windows of the nearby shops were painted navy and gold by their environs, with drips of rain like tiny stars covering the length of the glass and reflecting the sparkling light from the moving city around them. There was a fleeting susurrus from the water, drowning out the rumble of the speeding cars that kicked it up; the sound was like heavy rain, yet over in a moment.

Between them, a stiff silence made its home; the murmurs of the people were drowned by the dry and choking tension that stood between them. Time herself slowed and tilted her gaze towards them, pitying them, then continuing on in her endless, pointless trudge. There was no music, no watercolor melody that sang from the sparkling streets. Mere silence emerged from the busy world around them. Everything was as chaotic as it could have been, as wrong as it could have been, yet there was an off-placed tranquility in that very moment that served to comfort the two as their worlds collapsed around them. It was perfect.
