My wife stood behind me, with her hand over her mouth and her eyes glazed over with tears. She ignored the boy and rushed over to the dead cat, scooping it up with its entrails completely detatching from the body. The guts made a slapping sound as they hit the ground. As soon as Elizabeth came close to our son, his pupils would dilate and the spastic convulsing would stop. He was still crouched down and started sniffing his mothers feet and legs. She kicked at him and he scurried away into the bushes. She brought the dead animal inside & wrapped it up and put it inside a cardboard box. She wanted me to bury it. I was beginning to feel more and more detatched from my son, or 'it' as I had come to refer to him as. He was 13 years of age. We never notified the police about any of this behaviour for fear the police would bring him away from us. I don't know how long he had been killing animals for but this probably wasn't the first time it had been done. To disembowel the cat took a certain kind of creature. Even if you don't like cats, you couldn't rip one apart with your teeth and leave the entrails spilled out around you. Nothing could have prepared me for this night we were about to have. We didn't see much of our son for the whole day. He wasn't missing, as such. I would see him every few hours gazing at me from the bushes. All I could see were his eyes and some of his teeth.
