The scratching at the door was becoming more intense. It was early morning at this stage and the sun was beginning to rise.

We didn't own an animal of any kind and our nearest neighbour was 10 miles away.

The scratching was unrelenting and desperate. I had run down the stairs, wanting to investigate. As soon as my footsteps were heard on the stairs, the scratching stopped. I opened the door slowly and there he sat, smiling. It wasn't a proper smile though. His eyes were sunken, drained of life and bloodshot. The shape of his mouth was contorted into a snarl.

An animal lay down next to him. The lifeless corpse was that of a cat. The stomach of the animal was bitten open and its entrails lay spilled on the doorstep.

This thing, that was starting to not resemble anything human, was panting. It's tongue was hanging out of it's mouth. Every couple of seconds, his head would twitch violently to the right, then to the left.

All the silence must have worried Beth upstairs...
