~Hello. My name is Alex. I am 14 years old and I live in London. More precisely, I live at 42 Lexus Street. I used to live with my parents and younger sister, until they abandoned me. I have been living at 42 Lexus Street for four years now, one child in an unsafe abandoned house, with no electricity, water or heating. I do still go to school though.

I go to Westwood High, a plain school that can just scrape you through education. The teachers there are cruel, the students bullies or the bullied. Guess which one I am. If you said the bullies, you're wrong. Everyday, from the moment I walk into school to the moment I come out, insults and fists are hurled in my direction. They try to hurt me the most, because of my... Condition. The whole school knows I was abandoned, so instead of showing sympathy and helping me, they decided to make things worse, by rubbing it in my face.

I now sit at home, pen in hand over a my notebook. My one friend, Ashley, suggested I write a "Diary", explaining everything that's happened in my past and happening in the present. At first I objected, but took the book and pens anyway, to show I wasn't totally ungrateful. She claimed it would be nice to write everything down and get alot if things off my mind. To be honest, it's starting to work, and I've only told you about my abandonment and being bullied. I'm starting to think Ashley wasn't such an idiot after all. I feel like one, though. Talking to a book like I would a human being - crazy, right?

Ugh, someone's banging at my door. It's 10pm on a Saturday! Don't they have a family to get to or something? And if not, why at this time of night? I better go check it out.~

Alex dropped her book, got up from her sofa/bed and walked over to the door. Rain was splattering on the window, running down it in clear lines. She opened the door, and man in ragged clothes stood there, shaking and clutching a small, black cat. He threw it into Alex's arms, and screamed: "THE BOOK! THE KEY!" And ran of into the night. Alex stood there, shocked and puzzled. The rain and his screeching had made the words barely audible. She shut the door, and dripped the cat on the floor. It looked weak and hungry, so she grabbed a packet of sandwich meat from the cooling box (a box with a bucket inside surrounded by ice) and dropped some meat in front of the cat for her to eat. "Eat up!" she says, and walks back over to her sofa/bed and begins to write again.

~That was... Unsettling. Some guy turned up and threw his cat into my arms, shouted alot of stuff I couldn't understand and ran off. The cat looked weak and hungry, and it's name tag said "Kiara". Isn't that the name of the little girl lion from the Lion King 2? Man, this guy must like his Disney. I'm not even sure if he spelt it right, but hey, it's a name. She meows softly continuosly, creating an annoying drone of sound. I had given her a bit of sandwich meat from the cooling box, but she hasn't touched it. Just sat and steed at it, meowing, over and over and over again.

"Book of Secrets....." I heard someone whisper that through the house. Quiet and creepy, those words whistled through the dim, decrepit house. "Who's there?" I call out. (May as well write everything) "Book of Secrets..." it whispered again. "Okay..." I say, and turn to the cat. Shes breathing heavily, staring at me intensely. "Uh, okay then... Creepy cat, creepy voice, creepy guy at the window?!" He was back, the man who had flung the cat at me and ran off. He smashed through the window and threw a large book at me, and disappeared into the night again. Im not sure what to do, open the book or leave it? There could be a message or something, but what if it's a trap? Like if you open it and something bad comes out, like in a horror movie? I'm not sure what to do.

Why did this gave to happen to me? All I've ever had is bad luck, why, just why, can't I have the slightest bit of good? I know why, it's because I'm me. I'm not superstitious in any way, but I must have broken a mirror or walked under a ladder at some point. Bad luck follows me around like a dark cloud over my head, and I just want it to go away. Leave and never come back.

I hear a small Meow from beside me. Kiara had finally moved and was sat next to me, pawing the book that had smashed through the window. May as well open it. What do I have to lose?~

Alex put down her notebook and picked up the other one. It was leather covered, and "The Book Of Secrets" was written in gold on the front. Carefully, she opened it. Only the first page had been written on, the rest of the thick leather book was blank. Alex began to read the passage aloud. "Want to hear what it says, Kiara? Well, here goes:

You read. You write. You solve. You create. You destroy. You are human. You live to cause joy. You live to cause pain. You live to learn. All you do really is live. You live life. You coast through existence without knowing the real dangers of the real world. Earth is such a basic dimension, where only life and death rule. In some, much more terrible things rule, in others, better things. You re lucky to be so oblivious. But now, now you know the truth, Alex Swift. But you don't know all of it...

And... That's it Kiara. But, it knows my name. How does it know my name?" In her confusion, Alex didn't realise the book was beginning to glow. When she realised it was to late. She was gone.

"What do I have to lose?"

That was the last thing Alex ever wrote in her notebook. And she realized what she had to lose: herself. She had lost herself, to The Book Of Secrets. But only her body, which lay limp on the floor, cold and lifeless. Her soul remains trapped in the book, unable to escape, unless someone set her free. But no one was going to find the book. No one would care if she lived or died, was free or trapped. She was alone. She had been, and always will be, alone.
