Me and mum were hand in hand when more gunshots sounded. Dad was getting angry- very angry. He was having on the wall that joins our house to next door's. I couldn't hear what he was saying, but I could guess that it wasn't a polite 'Please stop shooting'.

"It will be fine, mum," though it was directed at mum, it was comforting to hear somebody say those words, even if it was me...

"I.... Know.... And....rew...." mum slurred, her hand squeezed mine and I knew that she was going to slip into something along the lines of a short term coma.

I held mum's hand tightly as she slipped into her own world for at least a day. The gunshots went off again and again, until dad shouted something and.. unlocked a door? I sat silently for a moment, not that I was loud or anything, and recalled dad openings door with a lot of guns behind it when mum was out. He had held a finger to his lips and said, "Mummy doesn't need to know about this." I opened my suddenly closed eyes in horror: dad had his own range of guns... and I didn't want to think about how he practised...

"Last chance!" dad shouted, but I knew that he would shoot the shooter. Then who would help mum? Without thinking, I unlatched mum's door and ran down the stairs to intercept my dad's regretful decision.

I came to a very jolted stop Infront of the open front door. Dad lay face down in the dirt. He held the gun keys in his hand, but no gun. I nearly screamed, but I knew that whoever had done this to my dad would still be near. I knelt down and felt dad's pulse. I could feel a steady rate and, suddenly, I could breathe properly. When I rolled dad over, I could see the blood on his forehead. Thankfully, there was no signs of damage. I guessed that the barrel of a gun had hit his head, causing the blood and the gash.

I knew what I had to do when I saw the figure running at me. I ran back inside and grabbed the phone, my hands shaking. 999.
9... I'll make it...9...the police will come...9....

"Hello?"

"H-hi. Dad is.. on teh floor with blood on his head and I really worried that the noises I can hear are gunshots. What if my mum is shot? She's I'll and can't do much for herself. Please come to ..." and I gave the woman my address. She told me police were coming.

When I put the phone down, a man's voice came through the door, "Ringing the police is a waste of time."

I froze. Surely not? But what if... My whole body turned around, suddenly facing the figure that had been running at me. The grin was yellow and rotten. Proper old style robber or criminal. I would not let him play me. He would have to kill me to get up those steps that lead to my mum.

"This is the end, kiddo."

I shook my head and ripped the gun from his hands. My face betrayed me and I kicked him in the shin, "My mum doesn't need the shock of her life!" I showed him away and kicked the gun away too, "Now, wait here apfor the police or try to run and get stuck in prison for ages. Your choice."

The man gave up the fight when the sirens came into earshot. Those relieving sirens....
