Read This Touching Poem That Will Give You A Unique Insight to Breastfeeding a Toddler
I composed this piece as I approached my youngest child's 2nd Birthday; to reflect on our breastfeeding journey and having been supported to reach my two year goal. Many moons ago I cried lunacy at the idea of breastfeeding "that long". However, when I was presented with facts about the immunological benefits that increase as your child reaches toddlerhood and the encouragement and support of other mothers, my perspective evolved to recognise the benefits and beauty in it.
I hope I will help you see some of the beauty in it too with my poem entitled:

An Unusual Height Chart

Instead of measuring how high you go,
I measure how low on my body I find the bruises.
First it was bruised nipples!
As we both learned to latch.
Then came little mystery bruises on my tummy,
As you began to unfurl your little legs.
Next came little toe print bruises on my pelvis,
As you continued to thrive!
The marks migrated quickly down to my thighs,
As you slept and fed beside me.
Still my baby, but growing so big... too fast.
And now, my nursling, you are two,
The little bruises are down to my knees,
But you are not so little anymore.
Soon the marks of our milky adventure will cease;
Then I'll have to measure you in feet' against a wall,
Instead of toes upon your mummy.

When I wrote this I didn't know where we would go from there. One year on and a just few months from beginning nursery, he is a self declared "big boy!" who skinned his hand falling off his birthday bike and still got back on.
But when he cuddles up and sweetly asks for a "tiny bit of mama milk" he is still my baby, growing too big, too fast.
