Jayanti walked quickly throughout the market. Her eyes were darting from stall to stall, and each one was disappointing. She was looking for something, she just didn’t know what. Pulling her hood lower, she glanced around once more. There, in the corner, was the familiar glimmer of the shimmering veil that meant there was a room. Jayanti walked swiftly, quietly slipping between customers. She arrived at the corner only to find someone already there, and they were looking just as surprised as she was. Standing there looking astonished was a boy of about fifteen, his mouth gaping and his hands running through his hair. Looking around, Jayanti grabbed boy’s arm and looked at the veil one last time. Sighing, she walked through the sheet of glistening light and disappeared from sight, trusting that the boy was behind her.

Saying that Marius was surprised was an understatement. To him, the series of events went like this:

Weird but cute girl comes into his corner, looking bewildered.
She doesn’t talk, but glances at him surprised.
She then proceeds to grab his arm and disappear, taking him with her.
He wakes up in what looks like a library, and then passes out.
Upon waking, Marius has discovered that he was, in fact, in a library. He has also discovered that the cute girl’s name is Jayanti, and that she has magical powers. Of course, that’s not what she said, but he preferred to think of them that way. It was easier to comprehend.

“So.” He started off, unsure how to ask the questions that were bouncing around in his head. “What exactly is your power?”

“I can gather memories,” Jayanti answered quietly. Seeing how somber she looked, Marius choked down his next statement, which would’ve been: “How awesome is that?” Instead, he responded, “Oh, cool.”

Clearing her throat, she changed the subject. “What about you?” She asked. “What’s your ‘superpower’?” Putting air quotes around the word “superpower”.

“Right, so about that.” Marius’ mind flashed back to all the times he had manipulated the boundaries of time and space, and of the everyday world. No, he decided, I can’t tell her, or anyone. Not yet. “I don’t have one.”
“What?” Jayanti looked astonished. “You wouldn’t have been able to travel here without having powers.”

“Well, I don’t have any that I know about. By the way, what is this place?”

“This is a pocket in the folds of the universe. It’s kind of like a secret conference room.”

Marius whistled. “Nice! But what am I here for?”

“Oh, that. When I saw that there was a pocket here, I knew that the board was leaving me a message. It turns out, that message was you.”

Now it was Marius’ turn to be bewildered. “Wha- I’m you’re message?”

Jayanti nodded. “Apparently, we are assigned to be partners. Although, I don’t understand how that could happen without your powers.”

Marius’ mind was going a mile a minute. Someone out there knows. “I don’t understand. Is there a mixup? I can’t be anyone’s partner. I don’t even know who the board is.”

Jayanti drew in a deep breath and fished a note out of her pocket. Glancing at it, she turned to Marius. “Well, you’re about to. Because we’re going to meet them.”
