It's time to erase the stigma associated with mental illness. People hear the term "mental illness" and they associate it with a myriad of stereotypical images, many of which are false.
The typical face of mental illness is not the disheveled "crazy" person huddled in the corner talking to themselves and the many voices they hear. Instead, it is your neighbor, your coworker, your family member, your friend.
It's the new mom experiencing crushing and overwhelming fear and sadness. It's the veteran, to whom we are all indebted, forever scarred by what he experienced on the battlefield. It's the teenager so consumed with worry about school, friends, family, etc. that they struggle to even get out of bed each day. It's the nurse that goes from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows with little or no warning.
All these people are fighting a tremendous battle everyday, oftentimes in silence. The quiet strength many of them display is awe-inspiring. They are warriors who deserve our support, not our ridicule.
