In certain regions of South Africa, when a person does something wrong, he is taken to the center of the village and surrounded by his tribe for two days while they speak of all the good he has done. They believe each person is good yet sometimes, as humans, we make mistakes, which to them, is really a cry for help. They unite in this ritual to encourage the wrongdoer to reconnect with his true nature. The belief is that unity and affirmation have more power to change behavior than shame and punishment. This ritual is known as 'Ubuntu', which translates to 'humanity towards others'. Pretty cool, huh? I personally feel that they are going about it with the right psychological approach. You can't fight fire with fire and you can't fight hatred with hatred. One mistake done doesn't make a person bad. All of us make mistakes and if we were to be condemned and judged and punished for every little mistake we made, there will be no healing and this would be a very sad world. We should learn to listen and learn to understand more. Only then can we have compassion.
