     Chapter one

Brena looked around. She was in a clearing surrounded by trees, with a canopy above her, almost hiding the silver moonlight. When she looked down, she found she was standing on damp leaves. Her paws were sinking into the ground as she stood there, a pool of water forming around them. She took a few paw steps back, flicking the water from her paws. What was this place? She had never seen so many trees, stretching endlessly in all directions. The air here was cold and clear, unlike the air around her housefolk's home, where there was always the foul smell of monsters. The air seemed to make her feel free. She had never smelled anything like it.
As much as she liked the air, she would much rather go home to her housefolk. This place sent shivers down her spine. The trees seemed to be watching her, reaching out, ready to grab her if she tried to run. She tried not to think about it, and decided to head into the forest, only guessing which way her housefolk were. But as she crept cautiously through the trees, a voice sounded behind her from the clearing, making her stop abruptly.
"Brena," a she cat spoke. Brena spun around instantly, kicking up leaves, and she had to resist the urge to tackle them. She looked around the clearing, but no one was there. "Who's there?" She demanded, hoping her voice didn't give away her fear. "How do you know my name?"
"Go to the stars." The voice spoke again.
What does the mean? Brena thought. The stars are in the sky, only birds could go to the stars. "What do you mean? I can't reach the stars." Brena told the she cat, but there was no reply. Brena took a step forward, but her paws didn't land on the damp leaves of the clearing. As she put her paws on the ground, she felt dry, sandy earth. The trees were thinning here, and there seemed to be a ravine off in the distance, but it was too far away for Brena to see clearly.
"Go to the stars." The same voice from the other clearing spoke again from behind Brena. She spun around instantly, but all she managed to see was a faint glimmer of starlight, but it was gone as quick as it had come.
Brena shook her head in confusion. How was she supposed to know what that meant? At that moment Brena spotted a small pool of water right where she had seen the strange starlight. She walked over to it and looked down. The stars reflected in the pool seemed to form the shape of four cats, each standing proudly on top of a great rock, chins raised and tails held high. All of a sudden the forms in the pool seemed to blink with color, but at that same heartbeat Brena was drowned in blackness.
