New Year's resolutions are made and broken in the space of a short time.

But to be resolute means to be unwavering, not throwing away your ideals at a moment's notice.

To What Extent Will You Go to Be Healthy?

Will you not just diet but make healthy eating a norm? If not, you will regain the weight, and have to try again and again.

Why not commit to being healthy, and change the way you think about eating? Do you care about your body, it is the only one you will get?

What Will It Cost?

Yes, you have to think about the monetary part of eating, but there are other costs, too:

-- If you keep eating as you have been, your health will gradually decline.

-- Are you willing to cut down on your intake of sweets and snacks, and substitute good-for-you alternatives?

-- Are you willing to change HOW MUCH you eat, if you consume a lot? If that is not the problem, you may have to look at the foods you DO eat: too much starch,
perhaps?

-- Do you think about what you are going to eat ahead of time or grab-and-go? It's easy to go through the drive-thru and get something quick and probably unhealthy.

To make sure what's in your meals from fast food places, you can get the sodium level and other ingredients on the Internet.

Talk to your doctor and a dietitian if you are unsure how to proceed. Stay away from fad diets because they can be dangerous. Consult your doctor before you begin any new eating plan.

Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

-- There are roughly 2,500 mg. of salt allotted for the amount you should have daily. People generally eat a lot more than that.

To convince yourself of this, look at the labels as you shop. This will open your eyes very wide in a hurry. Too much salt contributes to high blood pressure and other health problems.

I began my trek to lose weight almost two years ago. I have lost around 40 pounds and 9 waist sizes. Just cutting my salt helped jumpstart my weight-loss program.

-- Watch the amount of saturated fats you eat. UNsaturated fats are what you need instead.

-- Watch WHEN you eat. If you are going to have a lot of starch that day, eat it around noon so you have time to use all that resulting sugar in your bloodstream from it. Starch is converted by your body into sugar.

-- Be careful about the number of calories you consume, but you may not have to be extreme about this. If you are mindful about what you consume, it will help. However, mindfulness may not happen until later on, after you research in various ways what is good for you to eat, and not.

The important thing is to strive to KEEP THE WEIGHT OFF, not go up and down. If you are having trouble with this, look for othrr ways you can tweak your eating habits.

If you drink alcoholic beverages, remember that alcohol is turned to sugar in your body.

Good luck!
