A Baking Analogy

What is your favorite baked dessert? Banana bread? Pies? Cakes? Etc? When you are baking a banana bread, one of the ways you can test to see if it is done is to stick a toothpick in its center. If the toothpick comes out clean you know the bread is probably done. If not, you put it back in the oven to fully bake to perfection. The same is true in life: if we or others won't take wise advice, it is like that person has not gone through enough yet to appreciate and act upon the words of wisdom offered. I say it this way, "They haven't been in the oven long enough." Circumstances you could say this about are help with addictions, anger, or whatever major is happening to a person. When I worked in a recovery unit as a chaplain, I met a man who was 70 and had been through recovery 20 times. Wow! What are you going through that needs an intervention of some kind? Being abused by someone in whatever way? The list could stretch for miles. Sometimes when we don't obey God, he keeps taking us to the same obstacle until we obey. Not a pleasant thing to go through! But he does it for our own good, because he knows what is good for us better than anyone else, including us. How many people do you know who smoke even though they know it causes cancer? What about someone who drinks, risking destroying their liver? A diabetic who doesn't care about how high their sugar level is? One who eats the wrong kinds of foods to maintain a certain level? Another who eats large meals instead of six small ones each day? Little or no exercise? Telling someone they need to change something in their life may not make a difference right away or ever. All you can do sometimes is pray and hope they will "wake up" before it is too late. If you are in the situation of not listening to yourself and others, when you know it is wise advice, you are sinning against yourself. Please don't wait too long. You only have a certain amount of time left to live.
