I never really expected death to be easy. From what I knew, it was painful and horrifying. But it was different when I died. It wasn't that bad, but it wasn't the best way to die. I don't think there IS a good way to die. 7:35 a.m. I was sitting in my high school cafeteria, waiting for my friends to arrive. I sat at the table all the way in the back corner, the one no one could see because of all the other people at other table blocking it. It was really quiet at that table usually. 7:39 a.m. Delayne and Amalie, two of the four friends in my year -junior- arrived and sat down at our circle table for five. We talked for a few minutes until my boyfriend, Nick arrived. 7:44 a.m. Finally, Lucas arrived, filling the last spot at our table. He had only been sitting down for maybe a minute when we all heard a loud noise. 7:46 a.m. The cafeteria door that leads outside was kicked open and crashed into the wall. That was the noise. The man standing in the doorway was holding something big that I couldn't completely make out from where I was at. He dropped one end of it into his hand and another loud noise -louder this time- filled the cafeteria. People sitting near the door were screaming and running away. I stood up to try and see what was going on. Three more loud bangs. That's when it hit me. This guy was opening fire on the school. 7:49 a.m. "Sky, we gotta go!" Nick shouted over the noise. He stood up and tried to pull me out of there. I didn't move. "Skylar!" I looked at him and we ran for it. We locked our hands together and tried to find a way out. A few seniors knocked me down and separated me from Nick. He kept running, but stopped when he realized I wasn't with him. 7:51 a.m. He tried to get back to me, but the crowd kept pushing him away. The entire crowd was gone before I could get up. I pushed myself up and ran a few steps before I heard another shot. My ears rang. I fell to the ground. I laid on my stomach and my shirt felt warm and wet. I felt a surge of pain drift over me. I lifted my head to watch the shooter run past me and after the mob of students. I laid my head back down and felt tired and sore. My hearing faded back to normal. I heard two more shots go off, followed by a familiar voice yelling, "That's my girlfriend, you bastard!" I heard a crack and a thud, then I saw Nick turn the corner and run over to me. 7:56 a.m. Nick looked me up and down and said, "It'll be okay. Just hang in there. Ambulances will be here soon." "Nick..." I practically whispered. "What?" Nick looked at me, eyes watering. "The red journal... Page 74... In our place... I should have told you weeks ago..." My vision faded in and out until I blacked out. At least, that's what I thought. It was as simple as that. It felt like falling asleep, but with a pain in my back that I couldn't figure out. Now I know it was a bullet that went through my spine. And remember my last words? "The red journal... Page 74... I should have told you weeks ago..." I can explain. I have this red journal -obviously- that I kept in the place only Nick and I know about. It's in the middle of the woods on a large rock that faces out to the giant lake surrounded by trees. We went off the path to stumble upon it on our camping trip last summer. I found this little red journal in a small hole in the concrete under that rock. I was there alone, and when I opened the journal, all the pages were clean and empty. I started writing everything in it. Page by page, my life story unfolded. Every secret, every breakup, every teardrop. Page 74 was the page no one could read. I wouldn't even read it over after I wrote it. It held the one thing I knew I would have to tell Nick someday. After all, it was killing me. Literally.
