Is Change A Dirty Word? Read Count : 119

Many people hate change. It breaks the continuity of life as it has been, therefore they may want the future to hold the same promises.

But, if we dwell in the past, we miss out on the new opportunities life will present.

The problem with the past is that people are selective about what they remember. They may think of happy times, but not realize the downside to what they went through, such as very low wages. My father worked in the bean fields for a while getting only 40 cents an hour. Can you imagine getting that amount today for your wages?

Changes like stopping driving, a new home or job, the likelihood of living in a rest home, dealing with grief following a loved one's death or catastrophic illness, and the limiting of choices as we get older. Some of these are more heart-wrenching than others, but we still have to go through the changes, like it or not.

I have gone through epilepsy and blindness in my life, and spent my teenage years in self-pity. It wasn't until I decided to change my self-attitude that I was able to progress toward a promising future with a family of my own and lots of blessings from God. After my first wife died, I was horribly lonely, but God provided a new wife and family for me.

You have the same choice. You can reside in the pits of pitying your situations or let God help you see what can be a new life for you, beyond what is happening in your present existence.

If we have been cheated on in a relationship, we can carry the bitterness and hurt for the rest of our lives, possibly ruining it. Or we can forgive with God's help, and press on into a brighter future. What we choose for ourselves and how we look at each change will help determine how the rest of our life will play out.

We cannot turn back the clock, no matter how much we may want to. We can look at change as a bad word, or we can look for new opportunities wherever they present themselves.

For example, when retirement comes we can sit at home and vegetate in front of the television, or we can adopt a new hobby or choose to volunteer somewhere. Did you know millions of people in America volunteer their time every year? There are so many things you can do with extra time to benefit yourself and others, but it takes a change of attitude on your part to make it a positive possibility.
