His heart raced fast, sweat speeding down his forehead as if in a race with the pounding heart. He hid behind a tree with his flashlight off and his gun to his chest, attempting to slow his breathing.

The man attempted to listen as closely as he could to the darkness. Waiting. Fearing. Clueless about the company it held.

Unfortunately, fate was not on this man’s side.

“Officer Truman…” The sound of the radio startled the fit man. He fumbled with it as he whispered back into the radio, but they couldn’t hear him. “Repeat that, Truman. We didn’t hear you on our end.”

Just as Officer Truman pressed the button to whisper his S.O.S. again, his fate was brought to attention. Facing him with a grin from ear to ear and despite his scaredness he could only think of how the smile was similar to the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland.

A movie his niece had grown fond of.

Rolling his eyes and looking to his partner, Officer Allan sighed. “Look, lady-”

“I have told you, my name is-”

“I don’t give a shit about your name. You’re bat shit crazy and I’m calling it in.”

“No human can understand what other species are. Nor can they comprehend what Karma brings to the table.” The woman turned her piercing stare from Allan to Truman once more. “Officer, do you understand why you were marked?”

Truman shook his head, playing along to keep the woman satisfied. In his mind he was doing what he was trained to do.

“You were marked because of Vanessa.”

“Who?”

“Your thirteen year old niece. She has asked me and my friend, Jasmine, for a deal.”

Truman looked confused. “How do you know my niece?”

Allan placed his hand on the butt of his gun, ready to shoot if need be. He waited for his partner’s signal and he waited impatiently.

“You see,” the woman spoke softly, “...your niece has summoned me. Not this body, of course, but the soul inside. You believe in souls, don’t you?”

Shrugging, he kept his light on the woman the entire time. Watching her every movement, every fidget. “Sure. Why?”

“One misconception about a soul is that we are created with peace and need to be kind. Truth is, we all have our faults. We all have our desires. Those that aim to be human risk merging with a weak human. Though I am quite known.”

“You? I’m sorry, I don’t quite understand.”

Allan laughed and cocked the hammer on his weapon. “Give me the word, boss.”

Truman looked over to his partner and shook his head. “There’s no need for-”

Before he could finish his sentence, Allan stood up straight and placed the gun to his head. The metal warmed from the holster pressed so lovingly and he spoke.

“Your partner, Guy Ramos Allan, will fall as collateral damage. He is interfering in our business.” The voice was his, but the way of speaking was as if someone was speaking for him. “I do not have remorse.”

Without much other warning, the man’s gun went off and his head exploded. Bits of brain matter hit Officer Truman who pulled out his gun in habit, pointing at the woman who was deemed psychotic.

But she was gone. In her place was a ghostly, pale blue figure. A beautiful woman that could be mistaken for a siren if they had been by water.

“By order of Mistress Vanessa Alexander Truman, you, Garrett Otega Truman, are marked to have your soul removed.”

The man dropped his weapon in fear at first and quickly picked it up to start shooting at the figure. Sadly, he witnessed his bullets drop to the ground without penetration. The woman looked to the man and her face grew to be emotionless. Three Hell Guardians stepped forth and took an attack stance.

Truman watched and started to step back, stumbling but never falling. Quick on his feet he darted into the trees behind him with the Guardians on his heels. Looking back, he saw the woman was gone. His focus back in front of him as he ran while dodging trees and jumping over broken branches.

Now…

After forty-five minutes of running and dodging, he now faced his fate. Fear riddled his rugged face and his eyes were stuck on the being before him.

“Why would… why would Vanessa do this? She would never do this to me!”

“But she would have. And she did. And you, Officer Truman, are going to die.”
