It’d been a day and a half since Yuka had been dropped off by Edgard. Unless it was time to eat or use the bathroom, the young girl didn’t move and rarely spoke. Ubu hadn’t let her out of her sight and she avoided any contact from the outside world. She was nervous, confused.

“Where- where did you come from?”

“I told you,” Yuka spoke softly.

“You told me you come from some dimension and that you’re looking for someone named Kundalini. That’s all you’ve said to me. That is a lie. Dimensions and souls and whatevers don’t exist. So be honest or we won’t ever leave.”

Yuka continued to watch television and pointed to the game on Ubu’s phone. “What is this?”

Ubu sighed and handed the phone to Yuka. “It’s a game. It’s called, ‘Pong.’ Just slide your finger up and down and don’t let the ball pass your bar.”

The child began to play. She kept losing but it seemed to keep her busy. Standing, Ubu made her way to her bedroom and picked up the house phone. Dialing Kunda’s number, she sat on the bed and waited. The wait seemed like forever and she lied back.

“What?” Kunda didn’t seem too pleased. The sting in her voice made Ubu take a deep breath.

“First, I’m sorry. I have a-”

“I called you 40 times. There is no excuse.”

“I need-”

“No. You need to leave Esther. Leave her if she won’t even let us talk on the phone when I need your help. Leave her.”

“This has nothing to do with Esther. I swear.”

“Last time you swore I watched you get beaten. Then I watched as you didn’t press charges when I called the police. So you ca-”

“Ku!” Ubu’s voice was desperate. “I need your help. I need it bad. This has nothing to do with Esther but if I don’t get the car back, I’ll never be able to speak again if Esther walks in and sees some kid on my couch.”

There was a pause. “A kid?”

“Yes. I need to find some guy named Edgard. He left her here almost two nights ago.”

“Edgard?”

“Yes, d’you know him?”

“No, but… he sounds familiar. I’ll be there in a few seconds.”

“Seconds?”

“I’m sitting out front. I was scared that if I walked in you would be dead. I don’t want to find you like that. I can’t be that one to find you like that.”

Ubu was silent on the phone. She knew it would be unfair to her friend after all of the warnings she’d given her. All of the options and help she’d given her through the last year.

“Come in when you’re ready.”

Yuka walked into the room just as Ubu hung up the phone. “Here you go.” She held up the cell phone. “When she comes in, you will either understand everything or be confused.”

“What are you talking about?”

The front door opened and Ubu shook her head. “Look, none of that weird stuff about souls. Ku is sensitive and-”

“I know who she is already. You refuse to believe me.”

“Ubuntu? Where are you?”

“We’re back here!” She yelled out and looked down to Yuka. “Seriously, keep your thoughts to yourself, kid.”

Yuka said nothing else and the moment she walked out of the room, Kunda stood still. Even the moment Ubu walked out of the room and into view, she couldn’t move.

“Kunda?” She watched and looked down to see that Yuka stood still. “Kunda, what’s wrong?”

Yuka’s emotionless face let out its first emotion. A smile filled with joy as she stood there and watched Kunda walke close to her. “It’s you…” Kunda whispered her words and dropped to her knees once she was closer.

Yuka nodded and opened her arms. Kunda’s head leaned forward and into the child’s chest. Ubu’s face filled with much confusion the moment Yuka’s hands wrapped lovingly around the young woman’s head.

“You’re real.”

“I am.”

“Does this mean… we will find her?”

“What the hell is going on here? How do you know each other?” She watched as the two held each other and she shook her head. “I’m not talking to myself.”

Kunda looked up, her eyes meeting her best friend’s eyes. “You wouldn’t understand.”

“Try me.”

“This is my mother. Well, my soul mother.” Kunda smiled but Ubu didn’t. She crossed her arms and rolled her eyes. “I’m serious. She visited me in my dreams.”

“I bet she’s one of those witches you believe in, too. Or maybe the vampire you thought had bitten you then later found out it was just some creep that tried to bring you into a cult.”

“Edgard has all of the answers.” Kunda smiled wide and sat back on her knees in awe. “Right, Yuka?”

As the child spoke to Kunda more than she spoke the entire day and a half, Ubu shut them out. She didn’t understand how these two met or how her friend was okay with this at all.

“Look,” she mumbled, “...I don’t know what this is about but we have to find that Edgard guy. He dumped you here, kid. We can’t have you here. My girlfriend is not going to be happy that I lost another job. Your brother or father or whoever he is… ruined my life.”

Kunda stood up and took hold of the child’s hand. She started walking out of the door without a word to her friend. Ubu followed with a few muffled words. Her head trying to put together what she wanted to be the truth.

Could Edgard and Kunda be… together? Could this be their child? But then why the bizarre story? Why not just be honest?

The three of them sat in the car until Ubu drove off. She headed toward town out of a habit, realizing she had known nothing of Edgard to know where to start looking.

“Where would this Edgard guy go, anyway? You guys don’t seem like you’re from around here.”

“We’re not.” Yuka snuggled against Kunda in the back seat of the SUV. “I follow the signs.”

“Oh. God. You’re just a kid how the hell can you even know about that kind of thing? They don’t even exist!”

There was a tension in the car. “I am not a child.”

“Oh yeah? How old are you?”

“I am endless.”

Kunda giggled and shook her head. “She means how old is this life of yours.” Yuka smiled. “Ubu, why do you deny what’s in front of you?”

“I don’t, I’m pretty sure… that’s a fucking child.”

“I’m not a child. This body is just a vessel that fits the situation needed to get your attention.”

“My attention? Why?”

“Because you are naive to everything. You are simplified human. Someone skeptical and not willing to see what is truth. You are comfortable lying to yourself while others lie to you.”

“A vessel? Lying to myself? You serious right now?” She laughed and shook her head, driving without thinking of where to go. “If that’s a vessel, show me your true form then. Show me what you REALLY look like.”

“Ubu,” Kunda’s voice was filled with worry. “Ubu you won’t be able to handle what Yuka truly looks like.”

The young woman driving rolled her eyes and stopped in front of the festival. It was closed during the afternoon hours so there weren’t many people around.

“You two, stop. Whatever joke this is. I’m not buying it. I’m not. I lost another fucking job because of you two.”

“You lost your job because you chose to ignore my calls. You could have asked me to babysit or help you with this situation.” Kunda shook her head. “This is the part of you that I am not a fan of. You take my beliefs and my life and blame me for everything that goes wrong with you. I’m sick of it.”

“You’re trying to tell me this kid is some soul with no age! What else do you want me to say?”

“Just say ‘OKAY’ for once! Believe me for once! I know what I’m talking about!”

Yuka watched as the two argued. Instead of getting involved, she hopped out of the car and began to walk away. Neither of them seemed to notice. Less than a hundred feet away, she spotted Edgard. He was asleep on a park bench just beside the festival entrance and didn’t seem disturbed by the afternoon traffic.

She took a seat beside him and took hold of his hand, squeezing slightly and waking him with a jolt. He looked down at the child and sighed. “I take it she came to you.”

“As expected.”

“Well, I haven’t seen the old woman. She didn’t come around last night. If she did, I missed her.”

“We have to find her before she finds Kundalini.”

“Ten years ago, I would’ve just walked out on you guys.”

“You did. But I got lucky enough to be your mother.”

“No such thing as luck when you can see what the world is made of.” He laughed a little.

“True. But we have a big problem.”

“What is it?”

“This version of Ubuntu is not a believer. She refuses to believe in us and what the truth is.”

“Have you tried asking her what she does believe in? See her way of thinking and then ease in the truth.”

Yuka shook her head and sighed. She was quiet for a moment and watched the young women approach them. Kundalini looked upset, her happy mood gone while Ubu looked angry.

[Decisions to choose from: Ubu yells at Edgard, Yuka spots the woman they are looking for, Edgard spots the woman they are looking for. For this, suggestions are welcome!]
