The Boy In The Void. Read Count : 202

Category : Stories

Sub Category : Thriller

The boy, friend of dead fish, destroyer of existence, and now sole residence of the void, fights to keep thinking. He fears that if he lets his mind go blank, even for a second, he too, would cease to exist. However, the loneliness of the void has been mind numbing. Is this really existing?

He felt as if he had been floating for years. In the pitch black there is nothing to see, nothing to hear, and nowhere to be. Did he still have his body? He could not physically feel himself. If he had hands, he could not tell where they were touching, if touching at all.

The boy longed for a glimpse of light. And his wish came true. In some unknowable distance, there beamed a cone of light. The boy could not see what, if anything, was inside, and yet his mind filled with possibilities. Could someone be there? A kind soul that would be his friend and keep him company in this miserable place? He willed himself to float faster.

It wasn't long before he could see within the cone of light. Strange how perfect the light separate from the darkness of the void. Like some barrier kept them from peircing each other. Inside the light, a small field of flowers, and sitting in the middle was a girl roughly his age. The boy could not see her face, just the long blonde hair that flowed down the back of her head.

Once he reached the edge of the cone, the boy felt himself reaching to it. He finally saw proof of a hand. A black silhouette pressed up against the light. The boy's eyes filled with tears knowing he still had a physical form. However, he could not breach into the light. There was a barrier after all.

The boy tried pounding and yelling against the barrier, but no sound occurred. He felt his new hope fleeting. Then a word came to him.

"Wish"…

No..the boy shook his head frustrated. Last time he wished for something, it lead to the destruction of everything. Now that he found someone else in this endless void, he would not risk losing her.

The boy slumped down, while he remained pressed up against the barrier. He stared at the girl as she raised a hand to brush away some hair from the side of her face. Then she turned towards the boy. He caught sight of her eyes. The same yellow glow of that old man. The one that did this to him. Could it be? Was this just another of the old man's tricks? Rage began to rise up in the boy.

He pressed harder against the barrier. If he could reach this foul being, take its life, maybe he could fix existence. He decided to dare to wish. He wished he could get inside and kill. The boy felt heat flare up all over and his hands seemed to phase through into the light. Soon, the rest of him followed and he fell upon the flowers.

Not giving himself time to enjoy the sensations that he thought he would never experience again, the boy stood up and rushed over to the girl. He jumped on her and gripped tightly around her throat. He wanted to squeeze ever inch of life out of this thing. Till he saw her eyes again. The yellow glow was gone, replaced with the most beautiful blue he had ever seen. He tried to let go of the girl but his hands refused to obey. The boy's rage gave way to terror, he was killing his last hope of not being alone.

The boy gritted his teeth and mustered up all the will he could manage. It still was not enough. He watched as the life left the girl's beautiful blue eyes. Her entire body went limp. The boy's hands finally loosened and he let go of the girl.

He got up and looked down upon the dead girl. The boy wailed out in the light and ran back to the barrier trying to escape. The barrier would not let him out. He fell to his knees bawling into his fists. He wanted to be nothing now. He wanted to be lost in the void. The boy felt he was the real hideous creature and the old man could never be as evil as he was.

The boy thought of the fish. Even dead, they were his friends. He turned and looked over to the girl's corpse. He could do the same with her. She could still be his friend.

He rushed back over to her, gently lifted her head and upper torso on his lap. He ran his fingers through strands of her golden hair. The boy imagined a bigger place, larger then the cone of light. A place the two of them could frolic, play tag, and laugh any troubles away. In his mind, the two became fast friends and would be so for eternity.
