"It has been fifteen years, Sindaria." This statement of fact didn't phase me at all. "Don't call me that. My name is Dawn now." I had left that name behind me. Like everything else in my old life. My older brother knew it but refused to use my new name. "No. I will not use that vile name. You are and always will be Sindaria. My sister and non other. I really do not understand your fascination with those loathsome creatures. Nor do I pretend to know your mind when you chose them over us." The venomous growl in his voice left no doubt that he was angry. A shiver ran up my spine. It was at that point I decided the conversation was over. I hung up the phone with out any fair well words. "What, no good bye? Kinda rude, don't you think?" I turned and faced the man standing across the desk from me. "Trust me Shaw, the last thing I want is to have a hex to deal with today." Shaw Chuckled softly. It was a pleasant sound. "What's on the the docket today, detective Phyre?" I asked teasingly. "Phyre! Howl! There's a triple six down on fifth avenue! Get going!" "He seems to be in a foul mood today." Shaw grumbled under his breath. "Two guesses as to why. You know he doesn't like this magic stuff. It's the reason why he was put in charge of this unit." Both of us glanced nervously at the captain as we exited the squad room. It wasn't until We were in the car that Shaw spoke. "You know if anyone on the force finds out our secret we won't be able to stay on." "No one would trust us. It goes without saying that you knew right away what I am." I put my head on Shaws' massive shoulder and closed my eyes. "Shaw, do you remember what the first thing you said to me was?" "Of course. And I still hate you.". I laughed. "but not as much as I did. I am ashamed to admit this, fox, and it goes no further, but you have grown on me. Like a cyst." I could hear the smile in his voice and smiled too. He put his free arm around me as we drove on in comfortable silence. Ch. 2 Oh thank God! You're finally here! We've had quite a time sorting this one out. We've ---" "Two questions. What are we dealing with? And how long has it been in effect?" I doubted that they could handle most of what was in the magic book. "I only have one question. Why did we have to clean up your mess, Sargent?" Shaw growled. "Ignore my partner." "Well... that's just it. We've been through the whole book and can't find any reference to this. I don't think it's something we're trained to deal with. Come in and take a look." He turned and went into the town house. "Being your usual charming self I see." I chuckled as we followed the Sargent inside. "My silvery blond hair stood on end as soon as I entered the building. I could feel Shaws' growl of anger and he seemed to obsorb the light and air. The walls seemed to contract around us. It was at that moment I saw five young girls sitting on the floor sobbing. I had to fight back the tears that threatened to blind me as all the air vanished from my lungs. I went ice cold. Almost as cold as the twelve year old girl lying in a pool of her own blood surrounded by symbols of blood ritual. She had been dead sometime. And the smell of death clung to everything and everyone in the room. I wanted to scream. I wanted to run and never look back. I was trying to. But my body wouldn't listen. It was as if I had no control over my own actions. Somewhere in the distance a dragon let out a roar of pure, holy rage and grief. I felt Shaw shove past me but I couldn't move. Maybe it hadn't been so far off. I could feel my glamour slipping. Alarm bells began ringing in my muddled brain and a voice spoke at the back of my mind 'run Iyatchi! run or you will die here!' "I have to go." My voice sounded weak in my ears. Almost like the dying croak of a toad that had been impailed. "Detective what about the fox girls?" the Sargent asked confused. "Shaw I have to go. Now." Desperation and fear gave strength to my words. My body began to feel numb as Shaw turned from the body on the floor and scooped me up in his arms. Shaws' embrace was hot. But regardless of the heat, or maybe because of it, I felt safe and secure.
