There are two kinds of sorrow. The first is worldly sorrow, characterized by:

Wanting the status quo of the relationship to turn back to normal at any cost. This is usually a temporary fix to buy time until the next occurrence of the same behavior. For example, a person caught cheating on a spouse or physical and other abuses.

The person is not sorry they did something amiss, but that they were caught doing it. They may not believe what they did was wrong, but try to make it look like that in a deceitful way. One example could be a person stealing from others in whatever manner. The way people make up their own morality, you may not be able to tell why the person says they are genuinely sorry. This, and other types of worldly sorrow, requires great wisdom and studying the person's behavior more closely.

The other type of sorrow mentioned in the Bible is godly sorrow, when the person is truly repentant for what they have done. The Greek word for this type is the sense of turning around and going in the opposite direction from what they were before.

In either kind of sorrow, you need to ask God for his discernment to see if what is being said, now, is true or not. You need to look for a pattern of behavior that shows you the truth of the matter. You must be close to God in order to know what is really going on.

God has the true wisdom we need, and it is a free gift. Get close to God, and then add wisdom and discernment to have better relationships. Remember, he loves you!
