                          Chapter 5

Running his fingers through his hair, John laid back in his chair. Staring up at the ceiling, his lips slowly curled upwards into a smile.

Eric was right, he is indeed a cruel person.

                      XXXXXXXXXX

Chris was in the library. He was on a very important mission. And his target was right in front of him. Well not exactly, a big encyclopaedia was what was right in front of him, standing upright on the table, serving effectively as a cover as he would peek out from the book to spy on his actual target ever so often.

Suddenly, a face popped out out of nowhere from behind the book, right in front of Chris's face. Chris was so shocked he almost screamed and fell from his chair.

With a low but clearly irritated voice, he hissed at the girl, "Sarah! What are you doing?!" who was trying hard not to laugh out loud at his reaction.

She sat herself in front of Chris. With an amused face, saying, "I should be the one asking that question, I never thought of all people, I would find you in the library!” She exaggerated.

More amazed than shocked, she had almost forgotten that they were currently in the library. Hence, she lowered her voice and exclaimed, “Pigs must be flying!"

Growing rather impatient that his plan has been interrupted, Chris bluffed, "As you can see, I’m studying." He then stretched his head to find his target.

Shit! The target's gone! Where did she go?! Chris let out a dissatisfied grunt. Before Sarah came, the target was just sitting a few tables away from where he was stationed. Now, that seat's empty.

"Come on Chris!” Sarah purposely pulled the book away from Chris, grabbing his attention once again.

“You're not fooling anyone with that book!"

          "Hey! What are you......?!"

After giving it one look, she immediately closed the book.

"Who are you spying on?" Sarah asked. He was being so obvious, it was hardly hard to guess.

"Whatever I'm doing has got nothing to do with you." Chris bluntly retorted. She was starting to get on his nerve. He tried to get the book back from Sarah, who was holding tight onto it with no intention of letting it go.

"And I'm not leaving until you tell me who you're spying on!" This resulted in a serious 10 second stare off between the two. Chris biting down on his bottom lip in hesitation but mostly annoyance.

The adamant look in her eyes showed no indication of her backing down. She was being dead serious.

Eventually, Chris gave in. "Ok. Fine. I'll tell you."

"That's more like it!" Satisfied with his response, she gave him back his book, delighted that she has succeeded in getting her way.

"I'm on a mission to convince Bea to join some event." Chris explained for the second time that day.

Surprised to hear that name from Chris, Sarah asked, "Bea? As in Bea Kath?"

"Now that you know, you're in my way." Chris gestured her to leave, resuming his endeavour of looking for  his target. She got what she wanted, what else does she want?

But instead of leaving, Sarah said. "You might as well give up now. I heard she straight up rejected the offer. It's impossible to get her to join."

Chris rolled his eyes at her. "Tell me something I don't already know."

"What do you plan to accomplish by stalking her?" Sarah asked.

"Shh! She's back!" Chris ducked behind the book, catching Sarah off guard. Sarah turned to look behind her to see Bea walking out from one of the shelves, a book in her arm.

"I’m trying to get to know her. I can’t just walk up to her." Chris explained.

Sarah nodded her head knowingly. “So, what did you learn about her?” Sarah asked, curious.

Chris let his thoughts sink in. He realised that even though she is a top scholar, she apparently doesn’t go for classes. When Chris found her in the library, she has already been there for at least an hour.

When her question was greeted with silence, Sarah turned to sneak a peek at Bea again. She was sitting a few tables away and was reading a book easily as thick as the encyclopaedia Chris was using as his cover, completely oblivious to the two of them.

Sarah turned back to face Chris. “I could……” Sarah started.

Chris looked up at Sarah when she didn't finish her sentence and for a fleeting moment......he saw pity in her eyes?

Chris thought himself silly, Sarah was back to her old self immediately.

"What is your big plan? How do you plan to convince her to join?" she asked rather uninterestedly.

"Do you really want to know?" Chris asked amusingly, staring right at her, as he shot her a big smile.

Sarah gulped nervously, she had recognised that smile, it was the same smile that could make anyone fall at his feet. The same smile that made her fall for him…... but not anymore, she knows now better than anyone that it was just a smile that was plotting yet another scheme.

Sarah looked away, breaking eye-contact. Is Bea his next prey? For some reason, thinking about it made her mad.

Blocking the toxic thought out of her mind, she convinced herself that whatever Chris does, has absolutely nothing to do with her anymore. They are supposedly on good terms now. If she were to bring up the past, she wouldn't be able to maintain the image she has managed to keep in front of him all this while.

"Do whatever you want, I don't care anymore. But she isn't your typical girl, you won't be able to get through her easily." Sarah warned him as she got up. It was the last piece of advice she could offer. Chris waved at her without even looking up. His sole focused on Bea and only Bea.

                     XXXXXXXXXX

On the way back to class, Sarah bumped into Eric. The lad looked like he had just ran a marathon. He was gasping for breath when he finally caught up to her. "Have you seen Chris?" He asked in between breaths.

Half-heartedly, Sarah answered, "He is in the library."

"In the library? Are you sure?” Eric looked at her weirdly. He had a look of suspicion and disbelief.

“I was surprised too but I guess even the impossible happens. Anyway, I’m not really in the mood to talk about that guy right now. You can go see for yourself if you don’t believe me.” Sarah hadn't left the library long and she doubts Chris would have already given up following Bea, if Eric runs, he might even be able to catch Chris in his stalking endeavour, but she was too lazy to rely that thought to Eric, hence she merely waved goodbye and left.

Eric watched her until she disappeared into the bend before running in the direction of the library.
