Dear Daughter

Dear daughter,
I haven't heard your voice yet,
I don't even know your name.
But I just want you to know
To always hold up your head
High without fear or shame.

Dear daughter,
There's so much I want to tell you
So much I need to say.
But I'll always be by your side,
Standing right beside you
No matter what comes your way.

Dear daughter,
You haven't taken your first steps,
You haven't learned to be afraid.
Someday you'll get a job,
You'll go to work
And you'll get paid.

Dear daughter,
Life is over in a blink,
It goes by so quick.
Every moment is precious
Whether spent with family,
Or at home from work sick.

Dear daughter,
One day you'll find someone
Who makes you feel like no one else.
And they may be your best friend,
Your lover, or child,
But it may be yourself.

Dear daughter,
Know that you're the only one
Who can determine your future.
You may go into medicine,
Or go into comedy
Because of your sense of humor.

Dear daughter,
What I'm trying to tell you
is that you're going to be okay.
And big or small,
I'll be right next to you
Every step of the way.
