The sky was dead and starless, wisps of clouds clawing their way across the darkness.Tall trees reached upward with twisting branches and their coal black bark was ragged and broken. Cold white snow clung like scavengers to a carcass onto the shriveled, frozen pine needles that gripped the trees. Below their gnarled branches, on the ground, lay a thick blanket of snow, smothering and suffocating the grass that lay buried, still struggling for life in its icy tomb. The wind did not let out a whisper but held its breath up in the silence of the night. The only light came from the moon, a sliver of silver in the sky, choked by clouds that surrounded it. Against the sky rose a tall, silver mountain, dark grey cracks and crevasses running up its side like veins. Jutting out of one side was a dark castle, made from cold, uneven, black stones. A winding, dangerous, stone staircase slithered up the mountain to the castle's great mahogany doors. The castle had been abandoned for some time but now its new owner was about to arrive. I climbed up the staircase, placing each foot with care so as not to slip on the damp and gloomy steps. The icy cold wind silently bit at me through my thick black cloak while the castle above seemed to glare down at me and watch my every move. The dark wooden doors ahead were unwelcoming and hated the fact that I held the large silver key in my hand. I slid it into the and turned it, surprisingly, very smoothly. I thought that it would have rusted in the snow and rain that often plagued this land. Placing my shoulder against one of the heavy doors, I pushed it open...
