In a pit there lived a peculiar, tiny fairy named Lauren Jones. Not a pretty worrying, weathered pit, filled with soup and an ill-meaning smell, nor yet a fluffy, sunny, hilly pit with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a fairy-pit, and that means happiness.

One day, after a troubling visit from the gnome Boris Doop, Lauren leaves her pit and sets out in search of three greasy flamingos. A quest undertaken in the company of trolls, robots and hot ghosts.

In the search for the gnome-guarded flamingos, Lauren Jones surprises even herself with her kindness and skill as a computer programmer.

During her travels, Lauren rescues a rock, an heirloom belonging to Boris. But when Boris refuses to try running, their friendship is over.

However, Boris is wounded at the Battle of Britain and the two reconcile just before Lauren engages in some serious running.

Lauren accepts one of the three greasy flamingos and returns home to her pit a very wealthy fairy.
