So I was going to Middleburg Heights Junior High. I had a swimming class that I would usually go to last period of the day. It was a normal day normal swimming practicing. I really did like the swimming class considering I loved to swim and summer time is my favorite season. The only thing I didn't like about the swimming class was the deep side of the pool. At this time I was only 4'11 so after about 5 feet my toes stopped touching the bottom. I was scared to go to the 12 foot end. But mostly everyone in my swimming class went to that end. So I eventually learned how to swim in that end.
It was the end of the year. We had to take a swimming test for the end of the quarter. By this time I was a good swimmer in my opinion. I knew how to do the "Dead Mans Float", front crawls, back strokes, it was all a piece of cake to me. One of the test we had to dive for a brick. I practiced and practiced doing it, but I practiced in 5-6 feet. I thought I was pretty good at it until I took the test. The test had to be taken in 9 feet. I was confident I could do it. As I'm diving for the brick I do a front crawl into the water. Simple enough. I got to the bottom and grabbed the brick thinking "I got this". Well I didn't. I didn't push myself off the bottom so I was depending on myself to float back up. Sounds pretty dumb because I got a heavy brick in my hand. As I'm floating back up I start to run out of air still under water. The brick was too my side and I'm trying so hard to hold onto it and come back to the surface. Next thing u know I'm swallowing a lot of water. It's all going up my nose and I'm scared to death. Then I hear my teacher yelling something but I didn't know what. Finally the teacher pulls me up. I got the brick to the surface 😊. I had to put my arms over my head and put my head over the deck to help stop my crazy breathing. I finally got out the pool. I wanted to cry but I didn't. I was still breathing like I was having an asthma attack. The teacher finally told me she was yelling at me saying "drop the brick". Would've been helpful if I heard, but I was so focused on drowning I could t hear. So that's my near death experience. Now my biggest fear is going into a pool deeper that 5 feet.
