I'm sick of hearing Happy New Year and I'm sick of hearing how people have resolutions. Most don't keep them, or at least they don't fully follow through. I know that sounds negative, but it's true. I know you don't want to face that down, but it's still true.

I think resolutions are bull. I think realistic goals that people set for themselves without their having to be resolutions for New Year's get done. People, in the backs of their minds, realize that setting goals because of a special occasion is bull. They should set goals because they want to make an ongoing change and evolve as people. They shouldn't need a special occasion to set their goals.

Do something 'cause you actually want to, not 'cause a day of the year reminded you that you should because at least American tradition dictates you should have goals, things you didn't do in the past year, which is another downer. Being reminded of all we didn't do gets us down and less motivated to make changes. That energy then goes into the lists we make of resolutions, the most popular being to lose weight. That negative energy counteracts our will to make those changes stated in those resolutions.

Ask yourself what you really want to change that doesn't get you down enough not to, and set that goal. Don't just do it 'cause it's New Year's; do it 'cause you really want to attain that. It's okay to want for ourselves. It's not selfish. It's okay to have goals and things we want for ourselves because if we don't maintain ourselves we have less energy to be there for others. Most of all, don't give in to the thought that you didn't yet get it done, so what makes this the year you will? Then, you'll get it done.
