A man was told he had only one year left to live. He had several options he could do in that time period: 1) Engage in self-pity, and become depressed. What legacy would that leave for those he loved, though? 2) Draw closer to God, and intensify his spiritual side. Make sure he was ready to die spiritually, by accepting Jesus as His Savior, and living that one year as a witness of what God had done in his life. 3) Become bitter toward God and others because he didn't have more time to live. The Bible says that God measures each of our days, but we have a choice to make, being resentful or making sure we are ready to die at any moment, because none of us knows when that event will happen. 4) He could go on a long vacation somewhere or work on doing things on his "bucket list" before he died. 5) Work on forgiving those who had hurt him during his life, as well as asking for forgiveness from those he had hurt. 6) Spend as much time as possible with your friends and family during the year. Which option(s) would you do, if your doctor told you the news this man heard? The most important choice is to become closer to God, His way not yours, because John 14:6 says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me." Jesus said this because it is true. The problem is, very few people get advance notice when they will die, as this man did. It can happen in an accident of many kinds, a terrorist attack, and thousands of other ways. The point is, to be ready at all times to die, spiritually and otherwise, because what you choose or fail to choose will determine your eternal destiny. Your spirit is the eternal part of you that will live wherever you choose when you pass away. So, I ask the question again: what will you choose to do before you die. The answers you choose will not only impact you but also those who loved you
