He travels the Earth
searching for that missing thing
He’s a piece of firewood
seeking a match to light the fire
hoping it will brighten a darkened world

Not knowing what it is,
his heart truly desires
He travels to mysteriously foreign lands
Lacking any clear plans

He largely searches on foot
only using other methods of travel
when sure of its necessity
too afraid he might pass it right on by.

And with every painful step he takes
his frustration grows
And his rising anger pushes people away
until he is as cut off from the the world
as an undiscovered island nation
His temptation
to succumb to his worst fears
only growing in size

He’s a caged bird
One whose wings
had long ago been clipped
Unable to do what nature intended
That missing thing
His only hope for freedom
from a cage that he himself created.
A key to unlocking the vault
that contained the cinders of his soul

As he travels the Earth,
a ghost haunts him
Walking behind him in lockstep
taking the shape of that missing thing
Unable to make out its face,
the very sight of the ghost
Makes him feel like a patient
awakening from a coma
only to find himself in an operating room
being dissected

He’s a piece of firewood
seeking a match to light the fire
