The Lord God said unto Jonah, “Arise,
Go into Nineveh and cry to it.”
Their wickedness had come before His eyes,
Jonah went to Joppa and got on a ship.

Jonah’s fear of God had caused him to stray.
The mariners were afraid; God sent a storm.
Wind , terrible waves caused the ship to sway.
Mariners emptied cargo to lessen the harm.

Mariners all called out to their own gods,
While Jonah lay sleeping down below.
Shipmaster woke Jonah begging against odds
For Jonah to pray to his own God, so,

That they all would not perish here at hand.
They questioned Jonah from where this evil came.
Jonah feared God of Heaven, maker of land
And the sea where this storm has made its claim.

You disobeyed your God and so we are wrought
With this tempestuous sea hard upon us.
Cast me into the sea Jonah besought.
Nevertheless, the men rowed their hardest.

They wanted to bring the ship safely to land,
But the seas roared and, a sacrifice they would make.
Jonah was tossed overboard into the storm so grand,
And the Lord sent a big fish, bigger than in a lake.

The fish swallowed Jonah where for three days
He was tossed and thrown all about.
Finally, Jonah asked God to forgive his ways,
And the big fish just spewed him out.

The seas were calm and the Lord said again,
Arise, go to Nineveh and then preach.
For three-days journey, he started to wend
His way to Nineveh for God’s Word to reach.
