IN LIEU OF AN EMBRACE

A telephone call or letter
With a friendly piece of news
Is warmly welcomed by a friend
Who may be in the midst of blues.

Not feeling sad and all alone
When times are not the very best
Can be eased by the warmness
Of a friend’s eager breast.

Arms out, a smile of good cheer
I’m reaching out across a space
That can be drawn in much closer
To a friend, in lieu of an embrace
