Everywhere you look, someone is being hurt by people criticizing what they are doing their best to accomplish: playing an instrument, singing a solo, or a myriad of other things people try to do. The hurt can last a lifetime, but others always have to say something, regardless of what the consequences are. This was brought forcibly to my attention when my daughter was in second grade. Her teacher heard her sing, and criticized her for doing it badly, in her opinion. My daughter had sung before at home before this tragic event, but promised herself she would never sing again after this remark. The cure: Ask the person being critical if they would have liked those words said to them when they were a child? Or, if you are an adult at the time of the heartless words, somehow schedule the person to do what you were doing before they said those words. For instance, if you were playing an instrument at church, and someone makes a crude remark about your ability, set it up so they have to play the instrument next time. You could, instead, tell them later on, privately, what you have planned for them without having to go through with it. This may make them think about the impact words can have, before they open their mouth to criticize again. Try to forgive them, even though it may take a long time. That will help you to not have a bitter root begin in your life.
