(spoken): I used to love it when my father would boast, but when I was taken to the King’s castle and forced to spin straw into gold, I knew his bragging had gone too far. Here's what happened: (Sung): My father went to the king, you see And said, "Hear ye, hear ye, Your Royal Majesty! My only daughter, just 21 years old, Can do something amazing: spin straw into gold! Well, the king was pleased with what dad said, So he sent for me and told me that I'd be dead If I didn't do my job by the next morning. He locked the door and I felt bad after his warning. (Spoken): That's when he stepped in. As I sat on the stool in nervousness and fear, The sudden sound of footsteps reached my ear. When I heard a voice ask "What do we have here?" I turned to face the source and could've fallen on my rear. Sitting on the windowsill was a cute little man Who called me lass before executing his plan. He snapped his fingers and the straw had become gold, That was shinier than stars and quite a sight to behold. I asked the man what to give him for this Life-saving deed, and he said he wanted a kiss! Feeling timid, I got up and kissed his forehead, But he surprised me by kissing my lips instead! After the kiss, I felt the strange urge to ask If he wanted anything else as payback for doing my task. I then told him about wedding the prince as a prize And saw a twinkle in the little man's hazel eyes. He snapped his fingers and became a tall man Before letting me in on his marvelous plan: I could marry him instead of the king’s son, It was a different idea, but a very exciting one. Holding hands, our vows were briefly exchanged. After kissing once again, our escape plans were arranged. As he was climbing out, I asked for his name, Which was when he began a guessing-game. The next day, the King put me into another room. After repeating his warning, he left me with the gloom. That's when my handsome little friend came back. This time, without giving me a heart attack. After doing his magic again, I correctly guessed his name. That was when our moment of escape finally came. As soon as we escaped, the Royal family came outside. After the King was turned into gold, I had to run and hide. When everything went back to the way it was before, I found myself in a room with more straw in store. I started working on the straw, but began to cry. That's when my little lover returned, making me sigh. After encoring his trick of turning straw into gold, We kissed each other, letting our love unfold. When I felt something in his pocket, I let out a gasp, I then watched him put an item into his grasp. He then got down and asked while holding a golden ring, "Will you marry me?" Such words made my heart sing. Since that day, we've lived in the castle together. Where we have become our own gold collectors! Copyright © 2016, Lydia Brattin
