Whether you are looking forward into your future, or backward as you contemplate the life you have lived, you will see that you have to prove yourself to others all of your life. Let's take a look at a few examples: proving to an employer you are a good worker, passing tests in school to advance to the next level of education, showing you will be a suitable date or spouse to someone, and many more. How well you prove yourself to you and to others will determine your attitudes, self-image, how you get along with people in your family, and otherwise, etc. That said, now shall we look at the negative side of proving yourself, which involves how you see what you have become after all you have been through? If you have suffered emotional, physical, or any other kind of abuse during your lifetime, it will exact a toll on your relationships and self-image. For instance, if you are a woman working in a male-dominated profession, you may suffer abuse and non-acceptance by those around you. How you handle this type of prejudice will determine how you relate in other spheres of your life. If you let bitterness grow in your life, it will eventually affect all your relationships, and your health. A man I met as a hospital chaplain had carried a grudge for forty years. It was like acid inside of him, slowly burning away his health until he was in the hospital, now dying. What a shame to waste a life in such a manner! Forgiveness takes away these bad bodily reactions and gives you peace. You will never be good enough in your own eyes if you dwell on the wrong side of proving yourself! How have you handled what has happened adversely in your life? Since you are reading this, there is still time to make the necessary changes that will be a benefit to you for the time you have left to live. Only you can make those choices. Please don't wait too long!
