Samantha looked up, up and beyond the trees that towered her. She looked past their branches until her eyes were forced to squint against the blinding light. 

The leaves of the trees seemed to touch each other, their branches like arms spread wide, beholden to the sky above. 

Is that where mama is? Samantha asked. 

There was no answer. There was just the rustling of the leaves and the soft whisper of the wind as it brushed against her ears. 

Samantha raised her right arm and shielded her eyes with the palm of her hand. The light peeped from behind the branches of the trees. 

“Sam, let’s go!” 

“Is heaven there?” Sam asked. 

“Didn’t you see it?”

“The branches are so thick. I could barely make out the blue of the sky.”

“But you know it’s there, don’t you?”

“Well... yeah. But...” Sam looked up again. 

“So you know. That’s all that matters.”

Uncle Benny smiled as he took Samantha’s little hand in his. Sam’s eyes bore into his, her lips opened in protest. A moment later though, she calmly walked back home with  Uncle Benny.
