Light travels 
over 186,000 miles
per second
shooting like a spectral bullet 
through the heart of space

But it is never mentioned 
in scientific studies
the speed of the Dark

For the light comes
and the light goes
but the Dark
the Dark comes
and the Dark
It tends
to linger

and for that
you will need 
an entirely different vessel

The Dark consumes
A tremendous wave of velvet murder 
A smothering blanket 
held by the cold skeletal hands
of the ship's A.I.

A carnivorous force
with an appetite 
for even the faintest glow
you keep safely inside

It is the phantom ventriloquist 
Possessive
Manipulative
It is the voice from the console
It is the air in my oxygen tank
It is the fuel in the escape pod


I'm drowning 
but I can still breathe


The Dark comes
The Dark lingers
