#393 OUR TRIP HOME Read Count : 98

After much discussion, it was decided that
Monday night would be the time we would
return home from our trip to New Jersey,
in spite of the rain predicted.
The wind-swept rain beat upon our windshield,
hurling leaves,
swaying trees.
Then, as we passed Washington DC,
Looking down the Potomac river, so calm,
so peaceful, the glorious Washington Monument
stood at a distance, blazing light, like a watch tower
over the city of darkness and night.
Pressing on, our radio ejected startling news
into the morning. Serenity has been lost, it comes
In shock the sadness overwhelms us.
People previously unaware
are now cast upon gloom. Simply being at work
has turned to a fight for life, even death, and
PEACE is no longer there.
The silence is broken by loud screams.
