HIS PORCH OPENED HIS WORLD

An old man rocked his chair on Hester Street.
We knew he lived alone for many years.
We felt so sad that he could not come out
And do the things that other people could do.

He loved to sit upon his porch greeting
Those who were passing and looking up.
Each one would tell him about his or her day,
To neighbors he was known by his big smile.

The people who came by would wave his way
and give him lots of things to think about.
This surely helped him pass his long, long day
and made his life more interesting to him.

We learned of days since gone that helped us, too,
To broaden our know ledge of life’s experiences
That he was lucky to have experienced.
This made the man feel useful and not sad.
