Winter Comes Read Count : 140

Vaporous veils of cloud and fog hovered, traversing the full moon. Beneath the ghoul-grey clouds, ghostly cords of moonlight crept through the bare branches with an eerie glow. In the distance, creatures' sounds lacerated the night sky, and clashed with the sounds of whisking winds, scattering the ember-red leaves from the looming trees. Deadly nightshade, poisonous hemlock, and wicked wolf's bane guarded the cold and sticky ground. Hovering above the earth, an apparition appeared more like vapor than of flesh and bone. As the ghostly object drifted near, it mutated, bent, and shifted into a brute creature with corpse-white skin and sharp, tiger-like claws. The icy monster peered at me with hostile, wintery eyes, and sneered at me with a sardonic grin. Shuddering, I toppled backward, succumbing to the frozen forest floor. In an instant, I was ensnared by the beast, as it's razor-sharp claws and teeth ripped apart my clothing and skin, leaving me deathly chilled. It was the sensations that let me know I was dying, such as the scraping sounds that seemed to echo from within my body, how my skin stung like a thousand ice-cold needles tearing through my dermis, and the vomit-inducing fumes as my intestines spilled from my abdomen. I could taste the iron-filled blood pooling in my mouth, as I gagged and choked, trying to breathe. I started to fade. The crescent moon, now fully covered by clouds, no longer emitted tendrils of moonlight toward the soil. The canopy of leaves no longer existed, leaving twisted, barren branches. The wind dissolved, creating a disturbing silence. Creatures no longer rustled or sounded. All living things shrunk into themselves. Everything faded to black. A retribution of Dantesque proportion as winter clenched its fist and took hold.
