Mother please forgive me, But I won't be home tonight. Please don't look for me at morning, I don't mean to cause you strife. I know you told me to be careful, Maybe I should have thought twice, I never knew childhood came at such a deadly price. When you see my body broken, Scream the truth I cannot speak, When the preacher says his sermon, Show them what they did to me. I still wear my father's ring, And though my face you no longer know, I hope you'll hold me in your heart and never let me go. Now I lay me down to sleep, My road though short was turbulent, I pray the dirt my secrets keep, May the Lord let his child in. I was murdered for my skin, Butchered like an rabid animal, And the pain I felt was indescribable. Though my cataclysm is done, We are all still suffering Though yours has just begun, Under oppression we are smothering. Sew shut my mouth should it be a lie, But you're not the first or last to lose their child, To say we're equal is to live in denial. *This poem is in dedication of Emmit Till*
