"Mommy what are those little white pills for?
The ones you always take everyday,
Mommy...
What are those little white pills for?

Mommy, what is that yellow water that I sometimes see you burning on a spoon,
Sometimes I see daddy wrap a band around your arm.
I've seen you poke the needle in your skin,
But sometimes you blow it through a flute.

Mommy, what is that stuff I see you smoke sometimes with daddy?
It seems to keep you awake for days."

"It is my medicine,
It makes mommy feel better.
It is good for mommy because she is very sick,
And she needs her medicine."

"And that white powder you suck up your nose?"

"Mommy gets really bad headaches sometimes,
It's good for the pain."

"But mommy I don't like needles,
Don't they hurt?"

"Of course they do,
For a short while..
And then mommy is okay again."

"Mommy but I don't like it..."

"Why is that?"

"You always change when you take your medicine."

"How so?"

"Sometimes you just seem to sit there and stare at the wall."

"That's how you know mommy's medicine is working."

"You won't even come outside and play with me.
And even when you're awake for days, it doesn't seem like you can hear me when I'm talking to you mommy...
You're always so busy sometimes.
It makes me feel sad mommy....
Daddy is always gone.
Mommy I know you're sick,
But will you ever feel okay again?
I just miss when you used to play with me."

  • I work with kids, and seeing them, with their innocence, discovering the world can be a joy, but terribly sad as all the facets of adults become more apparent to them. Love your work.
