    Rocket building became a very expensive contest between the Russians and the Americans in the 1960s. Space scientists from both counties borrowed ideas from the Germans, whose Vostok 1, put Yuri Gagarin into space. But this was followed by an even bigger rocket Saturn 5 from the Americans. This sent astronauts to the moon.  In the 1980s, probes traveled across the Solar System to send back the first close-ups pictures of Jupiter and Saturn, and explore the even more distance planets, like Uranus and Neptune .
