The little girl was disappointed and her brother shoved her roughly, making a rude noise in his mouth. He turned the light back on in the small guest bathroom and the little girl squinted as the darkness was illuminated, her eyes slit from the sudden glare.
“I told you it wouldn't work, dummy!” the boy muttered, a gleeful smirk on his face. “I told you it was stupid!”
“It's not stupid, and you're a dummy! She won't come unless you believe she will!” the girl said softly, as if she were trying to convince herself along with her brother.
“I still say it's stupid!” he laughed. “I'm leaving you all alone with her, so don't pee your pants when you get scared, little baby!”. He laughed at his own humor. The boy flicked the light on and off several times while booing like a ghost and he laughed again as the little girl just stood there staring at the mirror. She watched his reflection turn to her and make a razzberry with puckered lips as he turned the doorknob.
   The door was locked.
“What'd you do?”. He rattled the door and it remained locked. “Hey! Not funny!”. Two hands on the knob, and it refused to turn. The girl watched his reflection shaking the door, calling out as he tried to open it. As he stood there, his hands holding the doorknob, the light slowly began to dim. The boy whirled around and stared hard at the light fixture over the mirror, then at the untouched light switch. The girl watched her brothers reflection as the light gradually died away, his good mood sliding off his face, replaced with growing fear.
“She only comes if you believe”, the girl said quietly, unable to look away from the mirror.
“It's stupid!” the boy said with a quavering voice, fear a thick grip around his throat. His eyes were huge and frightened like a horse, and he threw himself at the door again, but it resisted his attempt at escape. “No no no- It's stupid! It's stu-”
Something large and wet rolled in the bathtub.
The boy pressed himself into the door, willing himself to push it open, but knowing that it wouldn't. While his sister stood on unmoving, nerveless legs, staring into the mirror, a hand lightly draped itself over the rim of the bathtub, fingernails that were broken and dark rattling on the porcelain as the body rose up, skin loose and greenish grey, hanging in tatters in spots. The girl stared transfixed as her brother screamed and clawed anew at the door. He begged and cried out, tears running down his cheeks, as a moldering foot slapped wetly on the linoleum floor, skidded in until it found its center and the body eased out of the bathtub. The girl could smell rot and ruin as it moved past her towards the door and her brother. She watched nearly hypnotised as a frail arm reached for the back of the boys head, ragged meat and tissue trailing off it, drops of a viscous fluid spattering the floor, leaving slimy pools as the body glistened forward to capture it's prey.
“She won't come unless you believe” the girl muttered, her hands tight on the sink, her body shivering with dread. She saw the creature take her brother's head in its scaly hand, tapered fingers digging into his scalp and he screamed a piercing wail. “She won't come unless you believe!”
the girl forced her eyes closed, refusing to see the reflection and she threw herself from the sink, the smell of bloated, crawling flesh in her nose and she screamed out, “Mary No! I don't believe you're real!”
As the bathroom light brightened, her brother lay curled into a tight ball in front of the door, his hair wet and dripping as if he had just come from a shower. He whimpered as she drew him up to his feet and she took the doorknob, and it turned easily. She half hauled him out into the hallway and slammed the door shut, holding her brother as he cried and shook, his eyes tight and his breathing ragged.
   “Wha- wha- I don't want to- I- “
“Shhh” his sister crooned to him softly. “She only comes if you believe.”
As they stood there in the hallway, the light suddenly went out.
“Only if you believe” , something old and wet whispered in the dark.
