Often while hearing noises in the wall, Amid laughing of my family and friends, I’d lie in bed, saying nothing at all; I was sure they all should make amends. Termites were chewing I was herd to say With trepidation sounding in my voice; No one else could hear it night or day. To go on this way was not my choice. The meter reader was recording our use, Then he came inside to me just to say, Our gas meter suffered weather abuse; And he’ll need to replace it right away. “What is wrong? I answered him quick. “Is it making noises?” I also had to ask. He said he heard it make a funny click; It’s not registering the right gas mass. All laughed saying I’m out of my mind, Even when the meter was found To be making the noise of a kind I took to be like that of a chewing sound. Many years later in a different home Termites were found in our garage wall. Reading all I could find, I was not alone. Noises of termites chewing were not new at all. I say now laughing, the gas meter noise Wasn’t such a far-fetched story after all; Nor my being mistaken that it was termites Making the eating-like noises inside our wall. © Copyright 2000 by Jean E.
