Like it or not, America is gun country. The NRA "invests" heavily in our congressional representatives to ensure that guns will always flow freely throughout America. Somehow along the way, the constitution's intent to safeguard a patriot's right to have a musket for protection and providing dinner has morphed into unrestricted access to weapons of war.

Gun ownership for personal protection, hunting and sport is ingrained in our cultural DNA. It will never cease, nor should it. Where this issue went off the tracks is when assault style weapons, designed for battlefield use in killing as many people as possible, as quickly as possible. were added to those rights.

From what occured in Las Vegas on Sunday, how can anyone make a reasonable argument that a weapon that can be easily and inexpensively retrofitted into a fully automatic (squeeze the trigger once and hold for continuous firing), high bullet capacity killing device should be legal?

We need to demand that our congressional representatives pass legislation to make the possession of assault weapons a crime. Authorize a national buyback program within a six month timeframe for assault style rifles and high capacity bullet magazines. If anyone is found in possession of these weapons or high capacity bullet clips, there should be an outrageously high fine and heavy jail time. No exceptions. It is well past time that we citizens get serious and demand that Congress does the right thing.
